Engineering team addresses flood management, urban planning and sustainable development

April 8, 2021

Climate change and urbanization are increasing the frequency and intensity of floods in cities. Three researchers at the Lassonde School of Engineering sought to address this, perfectly illustrating just how York University brings expertise to the table to build new tools and strategies to tackle the historic crises we are currently facing.

With funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Professor Usman Khan led this new research in collaboration with Professor Mojgan Jadidi and grad student Sarah Kaykhosravi.

Interdisciplinary Lassonde research team publishes in special edition of journal ‘Water’

With the constant migration of people to urban centres, the growing density of cities like Toronto have increased the risk of urban flooding while climate change and decaying infrastructures intensify the situation.

An interdisciplinary research team at the Lassonde School of Engineering comprised of Engineering Professor Usman Khan, Geomatics Professor Mojgan Jadidi, Civil Engineering PhD student Sarah Kaykhosravi and undergraduate student Karen Abogadil set out to investigate solutions to increased flooding in urban centres.

Professor draws on expertise of the Lassonde Education & Innovation Studio

August 31, 2020

When remote course delivery became a reality for the 2020 fall semester, Mojgan Jadidi knew she would need some support in turning her third-year course, ESSE3600 – GIS and Spatial Analysis, into a successful online experience, so the Lassonde assistant professor of geomatics engineering turned to the most likely source of assistance: the Lassonde Education and Innovation Studio (LEIS).

LEIS was established in the spring of 2020 as a way of assisting faculty at the Lassonde School of Engineering in bringing innovation into their classrooms. When the pandemic hit and instruction moved online, their work became highly valued. Jadidi is a member of LEIS, as well as a client.

Lassonde team reinvents Renaissance engineering course

Don’t expect traditional subject matter or standard delivery from the team now teaching Renaissance Engineer 1: Communications, Ethics & Problem Solving at York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering.

“We always had a vision of the Lassonde School of Engineering as a different type of engineering school that embraces diversity, social science, the United Nations Sustainability Goals and experiential learning,” says Professor Andrew Maxwell, Bergeron Chair in Technology Entrepreneurship and one of the course’s instructors. “To do that, we needed to transform the way we teach.”

Luckily for first-year engineering students, the four faculty members involved with this mandatory course are among those at Lassonde most comfortable with online technology: Maxwell; Jeffrey Harris, an assistant professor in the teaching stream; Mojgan Jadidi, an assistant professor in the teaching stream; and Kai Zhuang, a sessional instructor and educational developer.
